Paradoxes, Purposes and Ponderances: Creative Freedom–Sort of…

“When we are writing, or painting, or composing, we are, during the time of creativity, freed from normal restrictions, and are opened to a wider world, where colors are brighter, sounds clearer, and people more wondrously complex than we normally realize.” -Madeleine L’Engle, (Walking on Water 1980)

My good friend Jill Pugh sent me this quote the other day. I love it! But it has gotten me thinking…How true is it?

It is true that when I create, I go to a different place in my thoughts. I could also say that, at times it is a very soulful experience. I am free from normal restrictions and the world, indeed, is a wider place.

I am given to pondering the complexities of human experience as I spend hours in front of the canvas, developing bright and deep colorations.

But it isn’t as pure an experience as it may seem.

I impose my own restrictions on myself in the process, even as I am freed from some external ones. Some are purposeful and welcome; some are demons I am working to destroy.

And often, when I create, I am pondering external restrictions from which I cannot totally be freed. Those thoughts run from, “How am I going to pay the rent this month?” to “I need to stop in the next hour to go up and feed the cats.”

Artists do have unique perceptions and insights, and we do have the opportunity to enjoy a creative process full of wonder. I recognize that all are not able to do that, so I try to share my process with others so that they can get a glimpse of what it is like.

But I am human, as are all artists, and we put on our pants one leg at a time too.

And even if our pants are covered in paint, we are best inspired when we open ourselves to a wider world beyond the canvas.

The Naked CowbowYou have no doubt heard of the Naked Cowboy.

The entrepreneurial street singer found that no one paid attention to his musical entertainment on the streets, no matter how good his music was.

So he stripped down to his briefs and started playing in the buff to get everyone’s attention. He is now a permanent part of the NYC Times Square urban landscape.

I am feeling like the Naked Cowboy before he stripped down.

I have 347 fans on my old Facebook fan page. I no longer call my studio “Art Adventures Studios”, but Facebook won’t let you change the name of a fan page, so I had to create a new one to have a new name. Getting those 347 people to move to the new page, however, has seemed like an impossible feat. At this writing, I only have 57 fans on the new page.

What do I need to do to get people over to the new page? You REALLY don’t want me to start painting in the buff, do you? I can assure you, my physique is not as interesting as the Naked Cowboy’s.

So please, come on over to the new page! I am planning all kinds of new schtuff for the page, with interesting articles, updates about what is in the works on my easel, and maybe some contests and things.

Hope to see you at the new page — fully clothed.

The Beautiful Brown Pelican – What Have We Done?

Brown Pelican
Digital Art by BZTAT

Just for today, I want to remember the beautiful Brown Pelican without sticky, gooey oil gluing it’s feather’s to it’s fragile body.

I cannot look at the horrifying images coming from the Gulf of Mexico anymore. It hurts too much.

Please, let’s have no debate here about the politics of it all.

Let us just take a moment to remember this fabulous bird and all the other animals from the Gulf as they were before April 20, 2010 when oil destroyed their habitat.

And hope for their resilience as the future beckons.
