Percy the Wonder Cat

Percy
Digital Art by BZTAT

I have rescued a number of animals in my life. I don’t recall ever rescuing the same animal twice, though.

Unfortunately, I have that sad task before me today.

Fourteen years ago, I found Percy on the side of a country road while walking with a friend. It was not unusual to find abandoned pets on that road, as it was a popular dumping ground for unwanted animals.

Percy was unusual, though.

My friend and I watched as this small kitten hobbled along, putting every ounce of energy he had into each lurching step. We thought he was injured and instantly jumped to his aid.

Turns out that he was not injured. One of his legs was malformed, causing him to have a very unusual gait. Amazingly, it did not slow his enthusiasm, although his speed at walking was not great. He mewed at us with great gusto.

I knew that this little cat would never survive in the wild on his own, no matter how courageous and resilient he appeared to be. I scooped him up and called another friend who luckily was able to give him a loving home.

Fast forward fourteen years. Percy has lived in the same home all this time with a family of dogs, cats and people growing around him. Despite his challenged leg, he has had no health issues in all this time, and he has led a remarkably happy life.

Percy’s family has recently faced some struggles, however. I won’t go into the details, other than to say that they have been forced to make some changes, and they are no longer able to keep Percy. Please don’t judge them. They are good people. Sadly, we all face hard times. They have asked me to help them find him a home that will love him as much as they have.

Percy is in Canton, OH, and it would be preferable to find him a home close by. We realize, though, that he cannot go just anywhere, and are open to transporting him to a good home that is in the surrounding area. He is neutered, up to date on his shots and has no known health concerns. He does seem to have a little tenderness in his hindquarters, possible from his body compensating for his shortened front leg.

Percy gets along fine with other pets, as long as they would be gentle with him. If you know of someone who could offer Percy a loving home, please contact me ASAP so that we can explore the possibilities. Please share this with as many people as you can to get the word out.

I cannot leave him to the ways of the world now anymore than I could fourteen years ago.

Percy has a twelve year old adopted brother named Andy who also needs a home. He has a potential home identified, however, if someone could take both of them and keep them together, that would be the best scenario.

Some photos of Percy and Andy and a video follow.

Thank you for your help in giving this sweet boy a good life for the rest of his days.

UPDATE: Percy now has a Petfinder page. His brother Andy has a page too.

Art of Kindness Paint-a-thon was a success and lots of fun!

Paint-a-thon paintings
Paintings by BZTAT

On Thursday, September 23, I engaged in a 12-hr. paint-a-thon. From 9am to 9pm, I painted as many paintings as I could and placed them all up for auction to raise money for the Friends of Stark Pound.

The paint-a-thon took place at Second April Galerie, who hosted the Art of Kindness fundraiser event billed as “An Evening of Fun, Food and Furry Friends!” and art exhibit. (The art exhibit will remain on display through October 1, 2010.)

A large crowd of art and animal enthusiasts attended the evening event, which included live music by Roger Phillips and Ken Weiss; several items donated for a silent auction; food and drink; and lots of furry frivolity. Several dogs available for adoption provided lots of barking and tail wagging fun.

I ended up painting 5 paintings which raised $315 for the Friends of Stark Pound. Bids were taken at the gallery and online through Twitter. Three paintings went to in-gallery bidders and two went to bidders on Twitter. One winning bidder was from Germany!

Thanks to all who stopped by to cheer me on during the day and to those who provided support online. Special thanks go to those who bought the paintings and provided much needed funds to the Friends of Stark Pound.

Together, we are the Change for Pets who need us.

If you would like to donate to the Friends of Stark Pound, you can do so here. Thanks so much for your support!

Art of Kindness: Yep. I am doing another Paint-a-thon.

This time last year, I held my first 12 hr. “Paint-a-thon” as a part of the Art of Kindness fundraiser for Friends of Stark Pound.  It was a huge success! The overall event raised over $2500, of which $520 was raised from the sale of my paintings created during the Paint-a-thon.

All of the paintings were purchased from bids taken on Twitter. Rumor has it that this may have been the first online auction done on Twitter, although I cannot confirm that.

I have done 2 other paint-a-thons since then, both of which were very successful and a lot of fun. And guess what? We are doing another one for this year’s Art of Kindness event!

All Proceeds from this Paint-athon will go to support the animals with Friends of Stark Pound.

Art of Kindness

On Thursday, September 23, 2010, I will engage in an exclusive “Paint-A-Thon”, painting animal themed artworks non-stop from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at Second April Galerie at 324 Cleveland Ave. NW in Canton, OH.

All works created in that 12 hours will be auctioned off in a silent auction at Second April and online via Twitter.  Online bidding on BZTAT artworks will begin at 7:00 pm EDT and conclude around 9:00 pm EDT.

My paint-a-thons are a great way to find some affordable bargains on artwork that my never come around again. You can bid on the artwork either on site at Second April Galerie or online via Twitter.

The Paint-A-Thon is in conjunction with a fund raising and animal adoption event entitled the Art of Kindness. Billed as “An Evening of Fun, Food and Furry Friends!”, the Art of Kindness will include an animal themed art exhibit showcasing local talent; a silent auction of pet-related items; music by Roger Phillips and Ken Weiss; food and drink; and lots of furry frivolity. Pets available for adoption will be on hand to greet those who attend.

Several artists from the Stark County area have contributed animal-themed artworks to be shown in a very special art exhibit. The showing is curated by Brennis Booth, co-owner of Second April Galerie.

Friends of the Pound is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to coordinate community outreach, rescuing and fund-raising efforts for the puppies and dogs being held in the Stark County Dog Pound. Friends of the Pound operates in cooperation with the Stark County Dog Warden’s staff to significantly enhance the quality of life for the homeless puppies and dogs and to increase their opportunities for placement through adoptions or rescue groups.

I will have assistants tweeting photos of the works on Twitter as I am creating them and after they are completed.
