For an artistic challenge, I am making a series of drawings throughout the month of January, each telling a story, or capturing a moment that has been part of my story. I am calling this my “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge.
Today’s drawing is a mini version of a painting that I did as part of a painting series over the past year. My Urban Wildlife Painting Series is a group of paintings featuring wildlife creatures that call my community home. Although their environmental origins are prairies and forests, these habitats have given way to urban sprawl. Adaptable creatures, they have found ways to share our mutual domain, and they can be seen in increasingly urban areas.
I have been fascinated by wildlife my entire life. For the painting series, and for this drawing, however, I drew upon a particular experience for inspiration.
For about a year and half, I took on a part-time job that led me on a nightly adventure. I delivered newspapers to earn extra money to support my art business, which had me traveling neighborhoods in the wee hours of the morning. On these travels, I came face to face with the night creatures of my community.
“There is something beautiful about driving around late at night when there is no one else awake but the night creatures that inhabit the city. The approach of my car startles them. They take notice of me, and they ponder whether they should flee or stand their ground. They regard me as my headlights capture their visage. I regard them too, with a mix of fascination and wonder. It is just them and me, and I see them – really SEE them – words fail to describe the encounter.”
