Midnight Marauder -“So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge

black cat in the grass drawing by artist BZTATFor an artistic challenge, I am making a series of drawings throughout the month of January, each telling a story, or capturing a moment that has been part of my story. I am calling this my “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge.

For today’s drawing, I cheated a little. I didn’t make a new drawing, rather, I dug into my vintage collection.

I drew this cat drawing years ago, and it has been sitting in a tub of old drawings for quite some time. It’s not doing any good there, so I thought I would bring it out and give it new life.

When I drew it, and when I look at it now, I imagine a sneaky dark cat, creeping around in the darkness on a grassy lawn. He is up to no good, and no doubt, off to plunder someone’s treasure of some sort.

Deer in the Headlights– “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge

This auction is closed.

Whitetail Deer urban wildlife drawing by BZTAT

For an artistic challenge, I am making a series of drawings throughout the month of January, each telling a story, or capturing a moment that has been part of my story. I am calling this my “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge.

Today’s drawing is a mini version of a painting that I did as part of a painting series over the past year. My Urban Wildlife Painting Series  is a group of paintings featuring wildlife creatures that call my community home. Although their environmental origins are prairies and forests, these habitats have given way to urban sprawl. Adaptable creatures, they have found ways to share our mutual domain, and  they can be seen in increasingly urban areas.

I have been fascinated by wildlife my entire life. For the painting series, and for this drawing, however, I drew upon a particular experience for inspiration.

For about a year and half, I took on a part-time job that led me on a nightly adventure. I delivered newspapers to earn extra money to support my art business, which had me traveling neighborhoods in the wee hours of the morning. On these travels, I came face to face with the night creatures of my community.

“There is something beautiful about driving around late at night when there is no one else awake but the night creatures that inhabit the city. The approach of my car startles them. They take notice of me, and they ponder whether they should flee or stand their ground. They regard me as my headlights capture their visage. I regard them too, with a mix of fascination and wonder. It is just them and me, and I see them – really SEE them – words fail to describe the encounter.”

I painted day creatures, as well, for the series. You can see the full series here. As I continue with the “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge, I may do other wildlife drawings harkening back to the series.

Nevertheless, she PURRsisted – “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge

This auction has concluded.

cat drawing nevertheless she persisted by Artist BZTAT

For an artistic challenge, I am making a series of drawings throughout the month of January, each telling a story, or capturing a moment that has been part of my story. I am calling this my “So Many Stories to Tell” Art Challenge.

Today’s drawing adds a feline vibe to a very important part of my story – feminism. I think it is relevant to connect the derisive “Crazy Cat Lady” stereotype to feminism, because the stereotype reflects a very common, negative assumption about women’s role in society.

The “Crazy Cat Lady” trope implies that a woman who has not made sexual relationships with men the main priority of her life has something wrong with her. According to the myth, the “Crazy Cat Lady” settles for the company of felines and devolves into a social reject because she “can’t get a man”.

Never mind that many women who seek the company of cats also have satisfying relationships with men. And never mind that women who do not seek male companionship have much to offer society besides their sexual availability to men.

Despite major advances for women in society, the general assumption is still that women are here for men’s purposes, and if they seek to satisfy their own purposes, there is something wrong with them.

My cat Ellie, AKA Little Schtuffs, and I would like to bury that notion in her litter box.

In this drawing, Ellie draws upon that classic moment of a man attempting to put a woman in her place, when Senate Leader Mitch McConnell tried to silence Senator Elizabeth Warren with the words, “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted,” and gave her an official senate warning.

McConnell may have succeeded in silencing her in that moment, but his words gave rise to a battle cry for women across the United States, and indeed, across the world. Stay tuned to see how that ultimately works out for him.
