Crazy Cat Ladies Rock!

The myth of the Crazy Cat Lady being some kind of social reject who hoards cats and ends up neglecting them is so yesterday.

Even the recent attempt by the media to connect cat lovers with an evil mind-wasting disease was knocked down with ferocity by cat bloggers world wide.

In a Facebook group of which I am an avid participant, we consider being a Crazy Cat Lady a badge of honor. Crazy Cat Guys are the bomb too! Loving cats and sharing with other cat lovers is for socially connected folks, not social rejects.

I decided that I would do a series of posts about being a Crazy Cat Lady this week and write how my feline brood influences my artwork. I hope that you enjoy the posts and the cat photos with which I plan to inundate you this week.

Are you a cat lover? Do you wear your status as badge of honor?

Disclaimer: I am an avid dog lover too, but having cats as my personal pets, they are my first love. No dissing of dogs and dog lovers is intended with this series, although my cats may hiss at them here and there.

How can I keep from painting?

There are so many troubling things in our world, it is hard sometimes to remain positive. As an artist, I know that everything I create exists against the backdrop of cultural strife and struggle that is in my world.

It is hard sometimes to remember that it is not all bad in our culture. Beauty and joy sometimes come to us with a whisper or other subtle communications, while ugliness and pain come with dramatic noise.

My artworks do not necessarily reflect cultural events. Yet they contribute to culture by bringing something positive into the world that counterbalances all the negative influences that prevail.

Words and musical mysticism by the musician Enya bring me some peace as I contemplate the pain that has screamed at me from the headlines this week.

And I ask myself, how can I keep from painting?

How Can I Keep From Singing – Enya

My life goes on in endless song

Above earth’s lamentations,

I hear the real, though far-off hymn

That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife

I hear it’s music ringing,

It sounds an echo in my soul.

How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,

I hear the truth, it liveth.

And though the darkness ’round me close,

Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,

While to that rock I’m clinging.

Since love is lord of heaven and earth

How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear

And hear their death knell ringing,

When friends rejoice both far and near

How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile

Our thoughts to them are winging,

When friends by shame are undefiled

How can I keep from singing?

..

To be an artist is to feel, and today, I feel a lot.

Peace for Aurora, CO drawing by BZTAT

I drew this image back in January of 2011 after the tragedy in Tucson, AZ where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Federal Judge John Roll, as well as others, were harmed in a brutal shooting.

The drawing is similar to other drawings that I have drawn in the aftermath of a tragedy. It symbolizes my need for resilience and hope when really bad things happen in our world.

I brought it out again today to express my pain, as well as my hope for peace, in light of yesterday’s tragic shooting in Aurora, CO.

I won’t go into the dialogue spinning in my head about the sociopolitical factors I believe are contributing to these reappearing tragedies.

Today, I feel, and I hope, and I’ll just leave it at that.

May you find peace in light of the pain felt around our country and our world today.
