Line the sidewalks folks. It's a Paw Parade!!!

Artwork by BZTAT

UPDATED: See updated info below.

2009 has been a phenomenal year for me and my development as an artist. Social media has opened up a whole new world for me in finding people who appreciate my artwork, and I have created more art this year than I ever have in such a short amount of time.

It may seem strange, but I owe it all to my cat.

Over the past year, my cat Brewskie (@BrewskieButt, AKA “The Brew” on Twitter and Facebook) became a social media sensation, helping me to develop friendships with hundreds of people who enjoy pets as much as I do.

These people have become great fans of my artwork, and as a result, I have had numerous commissions for pet portraits that were generated straight through internet contact.

To celebrate the wonderful adventure that we have embarked upon, Brewskie and I are going to host a parade on Twitter for all of our anipals!

The parade will center around a virtual march through the Canton, OH Arts District, with each of the critters that I have painted over the past year sauntering down the parade route.  Other anipals are welcome to join in the parade, walking down the parade route and celebrating their joys of the Twitter Anipal Kingdom over the past year.

We will have music, food, treats, and all sorts of fun as we celebrate the accomplishments of 2009 and the joyful expectations for 2010!

As is tradition for the anipals when they gather for fun, we will use our shared revelry as a time to help homeless pets. Our purpose is to celebrate the friendships we have made over the past year, so please consider making a donation to  Romeo the Cat’s FURPOWER benificiary, Last Hope Animal Rescue, to honor our anipal community. You can donate here.

We will also be holding a special drawing. One lucky winner from the drawing will win a 16″ X 20″ single animal pet portrait by BZTAT!!!*

You can enter the drawing by Make a comment on this blogpost explaining why you would like your animal painted by BZTAT.

No purchase or donation is necesary to enter. Winner will be drawn randomly from all entries.

What's on BZTAT's Easel? A Pet Portrait of Sadie Shih Tzu!

Artwork by BZTAT

Every pet portrait that I make is special.

I love animals. I love people who love animals. I love the process of making an animal that is special to someone come alive in a painting.

That said, there are certain portraits that are really special to me. This portrait of Sadie Shih Tzu is one of those.

Sadie’s “person”, Liz Hover did a HUGE favor for me by helping me create this website in exchange for the portrait. I cannot thank her enough!

I think the fact that it was so special to me made it more difficult to make. Sometimes, when you are too emotionally attached to the outcome of a painting, you end up forcing it and not allowing yourself to let the process flow.

Sadie-Shih-Tzu-WIP-1It seemed to start out well. Liz had asked that I do the portrait in a semi-abstract and whimsical style. I used a textured board to add to the style.

As I always do, my first step was to paint the background black and then block in colors and shapes.

 Sadie-Shih-Tzu-WIP-2

I layered more colors on to refine the colors and shapes. At this point, I posted images on Twitter and Facebook so that my followers could watch the development of the painting.

Sadie and Liz were so thrilled with it at this stage, Sadie changed her twitter profile picture to the unfinished painting!

But something was not working right. I am not sure what it was, but the face just wouldn’t work right from this point forward.

I struggled and fussed with it, and I even set it aside for awhile, trying to find that magical moment where the painting would just WORK. That moment never came.

I finally did something that I RARELY do. I started the whole thing over again.

I realized the problem was in the original drawing that I started with. Although the image seems very simple, there is a directionality to the face that is quite difficult to capture.  The second effort captured it much more effectively.

Sadie-Shih-Tzu-4Using my usual layering technique, I refined the colors and shapes, building up color by painting many layers of varied colors on top of each other.

Each layer reveals some trace of the underneath layers.

The finished piece finally captured the sweet mischievous quality of Sadie that was so important to me to show in the painting.

I will be sending Sadie her portrait in the mail this week. I hope that she enjoys it!

Thanks again to Liz for all her spectacular work in making BZTAT.com come alive!

BTW–If you are wondering about the background in some of the photos here, they were taken at Canine Action Sports, where I paint on location during obedience classes on Thursday evenings. Come visit if you are ever in the neighborhood!

What's on BZTAT's Easel? Basset Hound Sneeky Pete!

“Sneeky Pete” by BZTAT

August and September were incredibly busy months for me, so I am just now trying to catch up with blogging about some of the work. I completed this painting a few weeks ago and wanted to share about it.

This painting is Sneeky Pete, a Basset Hound who lives in my hometown, Canton, OH. His people stopped in my studio on a First Friday and commissioned me to do his portrait.

Sneeky Pete is an older dog, and he has had eye surgeries that have affected his appearance. His people wanted his portrait to reflect his earlier appearance, so I worked from older photos as well as more recent ones. It was sort of a challenge, but it was an interesting one.

My first step was to create a reference image from the photos provided using PhotoShop. I then painted the background black and started blocking in colors and shapes.

I refined the colors and shapes, building up color by painting many layers of varied colors on top of each other, always leaving some trace of the underneath layers.

Sneeky Pete’s family was very happy with the completed painting! Others in his family may appear in future BZTAT works.

If you are interested in a pet portrait of your animal, info about the process can be found here. Please email BZTAT to make an order or to get further information about getting a custom portrait of your pet.
