Murphy the Cat–A Sad Goodbye

Murphy the Cat
Artwork by BZTAT

I met Murphy the Cat and her human parent, D. Jill Pugh online via Twitter. Although we have never actually met (we are on opposite sides of the country), I feel that we have developed a strong bond through our online relationship.

Jill commissioned Murphy’s portrait knowing that her beloved pet was growing older and frail. She wanted a loving tribute to keep her memory alive for always.

Sadly, Murphy passed on to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday (January 8, 2010). She was 18 years old.

I don’t really know how to explain how I feel about this turn of events, but I will try.

First, I want to share my deepest sympathy with Jill and the rest of Murphy’s family. I know that losing such a beloved friend is a very profound loss. Jill shared with me that she felt a similar bond to Murphy as I felt with the original Beezie-tat, and I know how sad she must feel right now.

Second, I want to share my own feelings of loss.

When I paint an animal’s portrait, I absorb myself not only in the artistic process, but also in the essance of my subject’s being. The animal takes a special place in my heart, and it’s presence drives me through the process of creating the portrait.

I also try to “feel” the importance of the animal’s relationship with his or her human family. I believe that this genuine connection with the subject is what makes my paintings come alive.

I have no choice, really. It is just what happens. I cannot resist the force of connection that I have with animals and the people who love them.

When one of my subjects passes on, it is a very real loss for me. I am writing this post with tears in my eyes.

I feel so blessed and honored to have had the opportunity to paint Murphy, especially since the portrait has taken on new meaning now.

Thank you Jill and Murphy for coming into my life. As sad as this day is, I am so glad I had the opportunity to share the time that we did with each other.

Rest in Peace, dear Murphy. You have left your paw prints on my soul.

Thanks for a great Paw Parade!

Wow! What a Paw Parade we had on Twitter today! I feel blessed to have so many wonderful friends who made this such a huge success! If you missed it, you can watch the recap video:

The Paw Parade was a virtual parade that I and my Spokescat @BrewskieButt hosted in the Canton, OH Arts District to celebrate our friends’ support of my artwork.

There were lots of bands, floats, balloons, etc. The featured balloons had artwork by BZTAT on them! We had DJ’s spinning parade tunes and street vendors pushing food and beverage carts with the fabulous menu by @JavatheCat!

We also raised money for @RomeotheCat‘s January Furpower charity, Last Hope Inc. !

And, we also had a drawing for a FREE Pet Portrait by BZTAT! The winner? @PepiSmartDog, who, sadly, went to the Rainbow Bridge in 2009. I am honored to paint his picture.

Special thanks to: @FrugalDougal, @Romeothcat, @JavatheCat, @YourDailyCute, @Quadpawd, @FergustheDog and @PerrytheBirman and their staffs for helping organize the Paw Parade!

And Special thanks to all that participated. Your support means so much to me. I love you all!

What's on BZTAT's Easel? Tiger Lilly and Tink!

Artwork by BZTAT

About this time last year, I completed my first commissioned pet portrait painting of a dog named Harvey. It is only fitting that I would complete the painting of his housemates, Tiger Lilly and Tink at the same time this year!

Like Harvey, I actually had the opportunity to meet my subjects for this portrait. I went to see Tiger Lilly and Tink at their home and snapped a bunch of photos.

Tink was quite the ham.

Tiger Lilly, on the other hand, was a bit more reclusive.

Both were very sweet and fun and lovable. They did show some disdain for their housemate Harvey, however.

Although I took several photos, I ended up using one submitted by their person for the basic structure of the painting.

I was really struck by the poses in this photo. It was not an easy picture to work from, because the cats are behind a window screen. The other photos helped me with details.

The First step in creating the painting was to develop a reference image from the photo using Photoshop filters, which I then traced onto a black canvas using a projector. I then started blocking in shapes with color.

Using my usual layering technique, I refined the colors and shapes, building up color by painting many layers of varied colors on top of each other. Each layer shows some trace of the underneath layers.

I tend to paint grayish cats in blue tones; striped cats with very simplified implications of stripes. My colors are what are distinctive about my paintings, so grays do not tend to go onto my palette.

As long as the character of the animal is portrayed, my patrons tend to enjoy the color absraction and the simplification of shapes and patterns.

The background of this portrait was designed to coordinate with the background in Harvey’s painiting.

Harvey

Tiger Lilly and Tink were so much fun to paint, as was Harvey! I am so grateful to them and their family for getting me started on this journey of painting the portraits of beloved pets.  It has been such a great year with each portrait being a grand adventure!

If you are interested in a pet portrait of your animal, info about the process can be found here.

Happy Holidays! may the season be filled with love, light and peace, and ADVENTURE!
