Percy the Wonder Cat

Percy
Digital Art by BZTAT

I have rescued a number of animals in my life. I don’t recall ever rescuing the same animal twice, though.

Unfortunately, I have that sad task before me today.

Fourteen years ago, I found Percy on the side of a country road while walking with a friend. It was not unusual to find abandoned pets on that road, as it was a popular dumping ground for unwanted animals.

Percy was unusual, though.

My friend and I watched as this small kitten hobbled along, putting every ounce of energy he had into each lurching step. We thought he was injured and instantly jumped to his aid.

Turns out that he was not injured. One of his legs was malformed, causing him to have a very unusual gait. Amazingly, it did not slow his enthusiasm, although his speed at walking was not great. He mewed at us with great gusto.

I knew that this little cat would never survive in the wild on his own, no matter how courageous and resilient he appeared to be. I scooped him up and called another friend who luckily was able to give him a loving home.

Fast forward fourteen years. Percy has lived in the same home all this time with a family of dogs, cats and people growing around him. Despite his challenged leg, he has had no health issues in all this time, and he has led a remarkably happy life.

Percy’s family has recently faced some struggles, however. I won’t go into the details, other than to say that they have been forced to make some changes, and they are no longer able to keep Percy. Please don’t judge them. They are good people. Sadly, we all face hard times. They have asked me to help them find him a home that will love him as much as they have.

Percy is in Canton, OH, and it would be preferable to find him a home close by. We realize, though, that he cannot go just anywhere, and are open to transporting him to a good home that is in the surrounding area. He is neutered, up to date on his shots and has no known health concerns. He does seem to have a little tenderness in his hindquarters, possible from his body compensating for his shortened front leg.

Percy gets along fine with other pets, as long as they would be gentle with him. If you know of someone who could offer Percy a loving home, please contact me ASAP so that we can explore the possibilities. Please share this with as many people as you can to get the word out.

I cannot leave him to the ways of the world now anymore than I could fourteen years ago.

Percy has a twelve year old adopted brother named Andy who also needs a home. He has a potential home identified, however, if someone could take both of them and keep them together, that would be the best scenario.

Some photos of Percy and Andy and a video follow.

Thank you for your help in giving this sweet boy a good life for the rest of his days.

UPDATE: Percy now has a Petfinder page. His brother Andy has a page too.

Whiskers
"Whiskers" Drawing by BZTAT

I posted this image awhile back. It is a drawing that I made of Whiskers, a 15 year old cat who needs a home. I drew it in hopes that someone would fall in love with Whiskers and take her into his or her family.

So far, my efforts have not worked.

Whiskers is not on “death row” like many animals who are up for adoption. Still, she is a wonderful animal, and she deserves a home.

I thought I would post her drawing again, since today begins the “Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet” challenge set forth by the Be the Change Panel at BlogPaws West.

There are many animals awaiting adoption across the country who have been classified as “Less Adoptable”. I, like Dr. V. at Pawcurious, am a little dismayed at the classification. I’d prefer to call them “Pets with Pizazz”.

These pets do have pizazz! They are often overlooked because of age, special needs and/or medical conditions that require a little extra attention. But they are as lovable and giving as any other pet, often more so.

I am glad that Petfinder and Be the Change for Pets are focusing on them to help them find homes. These animals have great courage and spirit, and they deserve our extra attention.

Life has been a challenge for Whiskers. She reportedly endured neglect in her past life, yet her current caretakers say she is now the most grateful of felines.

It is time to give her a change and let her see the good side of humanity. Can you help Be the Change for Whiskers?

If not Whiskers, do you know another “Pet with Pizazz” who you can help out?

Although Whiskers is located in the Richmond, VA area, assistance to relocate her to another area is available. You can learn more about her and how to contact her foster family here at CrystalsAndJewelry.com Blog & News.

Whoever gives Whiskers a permanent home will receive her portrait shown above as an extra bonus.

Feel free to re-post the drawing of Whiskers, if you would like, to help her find a home. Please do credit the image with “Artwork by BZTAT” with a link to this blog.

I used because of the leg pain (or rather due to the unbearable constant pain caused by the tumor in the knee joint).

Let’s find this fabulous feline a permanent home.

Whiskers was featured in the video below by the “Be the Change for Pets” panel. The whole video is very moving.

It brings me to ask, what is your gift, and how can you use it to help pets in need?

Be the Change for Whiskers: An Amazing Cat; An Amazing Story

Whiskers
"Whiskers" Drawing by BZTAT

Every cat has a story, I am sure. if only we knew what really was being thought behind the mysterious contemplative eyes of each feline that we encountered in life…

I am sure that we would be humbled.

The cat pictured above is a regal feline named “Whiskers”. Resilient and strong for sure, Whiskers has endured neglect in her past life, yet her current caretakers say she is the most grateful of felines. She asks little, but gives much.

WhiskersWhiskers is a quiet cat who seems nonplussed by other cats and is well acclimated to domestic life. She is a mature lady, approximately 15 years old, and certain to give someone a lot of love in her remaining years.

Sadly, her foster family who has been nurturing her back to health cannot keep her.

When my friend Robyn Harton shared her story with me, it moved me in much the same way as Little Meow’s story did. I wanted to draw her picture, and I wanted to help her find a home.

Life has been a challenge for Whiskers. It is time to give her a change and let her see the good side of humanity. Can you help Be the Change for Whiskers?

Do you know someone who might be wanting Whiskers’ love? She is in the Richmond, VA area, but can travel to a good home in the United States. Can you help her find a home?

You can learn more about her and how to contact her foster family here at CrystalsAndJewelry.com Blog & News.

If you are not inclined to be involved in pet rescue, that is fine. I hope that you will still share in the celebration of this amazing cat’s life through my artwork.

To me, the best art is motivated by a deeply felt experience, and that certainly is the case with the story of Whiskers.
