An Artist’s Perspective on the Polar Vortex

As the greatest part of the United States is under the spell of the so-called “Polar Vortex“, people from Georgia to Minnesota are reaching for metaphors and other ways to describe the indescribable cold weather that has settled in around us.

Many have taken to You Tube with videos of themselves throwing boiling water into the cold abyss, as if creating their own snow was some kind of miraculous new thing.

Others have turned to other social media sites, sharing “selfies” or photos of themselves barely visible beneath the layers of clothing they have donned to prevent the cold from getting in. Photos of sad canines in boots and sweaters have been a hit as well.

There are the photos of vehicle thermometers recording the subzero temperatures, and the photos of backyards and buried patio furniture to record images of record snow drifts. There are also the multiple warnings to keep children and pets indoors. (HEED THEM FOLKS!)

And then, of course, the cynics come in and admonish us all for being so ridiculous.

But lets face it. Weather events like this are unusual, and if not for sharing about in a giddy way with our friends, how are we supposed to endure it?

My Selfie with Mia Meow

You would think an artist would have more inspirational thoughts than most on the matter, but I confess, my Polar Vortex  social media posts were mostly like everyone else’s. I expressed frustration about my truck being frozen shut and joy about the warmth of my new kitten Mia.

The truth is, Nature is artful enough without my input. Despite the brutal cold, the beauty of snow and ice is stunning. As we gasp for air that is breathable, we also gasp at the sheer wonder of Nature’s unbelievable power and beauty.

So the artist’s perspective is not much different than that of anyone one else.

Follow the wisdom of those who give guidance for enduring the brutal cold, share your experiences with those you love, and enjoy the wonder of Nature’s immense power.

That is the artist’s perspective. What is yours?

Whatever you do to survive the Polar Vortex, enjoy the Adventure!

Custom Pet Portrait Paintings of Dogs, Cats and Other Companion Animals by BZTAT
“Thomas and Oliver” Custom Portrait by BZTAT

Welcome to the new and improved website for BZTAT Studios! It has taken a lot of work, but the website has been entirely rebuilt from scratch. Some things are reminiscent of the old site, but it is all restructured and redesigned with the goal of making it easy and pleasurable to navigate.

The emphasis of the new site reflects my renewed focus on creating custom pet themed artworks for contemporary minded pet lovers. Although my other areas of artwork (public art, non-customized paintings and drawings, and cards and other print materials, etc.) are still available, they are less emphasized on this site.

My custom work is where I do my best art, I think, and I enjoy making it. It has the most appeal to my collectors, also, so it makes sense to refocus the majority of my energy in that direction.

I have added new custom artwork options as well! I now have 4 different types of custom pet portraits:

Premiere Contemporary Custom Pet Portrait Paintings

Formerly called Pop Art style portraits, Premiere Contemporary Custom Pet Portraits are deluxe, highly customized contemporary works of art that appeal to the design conscious pet lover.

Contemporary Custom Folk Art Portrait Paintings

Contemporary Folk Art Portrait Paintings reflect the characteristics of your pet in a fun, loose and whimsical fashion. Although less customized that the Premiere Contemporary Custom Pet Portrait Paintings, Folk Art style portraits capture the essence of your pet in a colorful and cheerful work of art.

Contemporary Custom Pet Portrait Drawings

Contemporary Custom Pet Portrait Drawings are new for 2014! I have done these on occasion for special requests, but I have not promoted them a as standard option before now. If a painting is a stretch for your budget, or space on your walls is sparse, a drawing may be a more affordable option for you to celebrate the love you have for your pet.

Contemporary Custom Digital Pet Portraits

Contemporary Custom Digital Pet Portraits are also new for 2014. Again, I have done these before on request, but I have not promoted them as a standard option before now. Contemporary Digital Pet Portraits are created from your photos in a contemporary digital style. Using a variety of digital apps and filters, I digitally manipulate your photo into a unique, one of a kind artwork.

I have 3 different styles of digital portraits. Check out the different options here.

With this new site, there is less clutter and softer colors in the background, all intended to make the customer experience more enjoyable. I hope you like it and will visit often!

If you followed the old blog posts, you will need to sign up for the new RSS feed or email delivery in the widgets on the left. Please contact me if you have any problems. All of the blog posts from the old blog have been migrated into this site, so you can still peruse old posts at your leisure.

Enjoy the new adventures. The best is yet to come! Thanks for following along!

Vision for 2014 in a Word: Focus

Vision rainbow image by BZTATFor the past few years, I have marked the end of the year with a post envisioning my goals for the next year. I have created “vision boards” in past years, following a trend that claimed that visualizing goals with representative images will make it more likely that the goals will be realized.

I have had mixed results with my past vision boards. Some of the same goals have been posted and re-posted, yet, my progress on them has been haphazard.

I am a visual person, so bringing an image to a goal is more fun than exercise for me. I suspect that takes away from the impact of a vision board for me.

So this year, I am not posting any images other than the one that you see above. Instead, I am going to post a word -one word only- that, I hope, will characterize my desired direction for 2014.

FOCUS

A person can have great ideas and visualizations. But without focus, those ideas either fail to be implemented, or their implementation is scattered. For me, it has been the latter, especially in 2013.

I believe that I needed to take a scattered approach previously. Being new to the concept of entrepreneurship and the business of art, I needed to try new things and I needed to explore without being definitive of my purpose. But it is time to get serious now.

I know where I want to go. I know what elements of my repertoire that I want to emphasize. And I know what things may tempt me, but actually can end up becoming mission creep.

For 2014, I plan to focus on my pet portraiture as my main activity. I plan to establish 4 lines of work in this area:

  • Premiere Contemporary Custom Pet Portrait Paintings (formerly called Pop Art Style portraits)
  • Contemporary Folk Art Pet Portrait Paintings (formerly called  Folk Art Style portraits)
  • Contemporary Pet Portrait Drawings (new)
  • Contemporary Digital Pet Portraits (new)

I will create other artworks as well, however, I am not going to pursue the market for these items as rigorously as I have in the past. If opportunities arise, I will consider them, but I am not going to beat the bushes for the opportunities. Less emphasized will be:

  • Paint-a-thon paintings and drawings
  • Public Art
  • Community and Social Awareness artworks

I will continue Okey’s Promise based artworks, however, these will likely be scaled back to smaller projects. I will also continue creating artworks that are part of my creative drive and simply call out to me to be created.

I have chosen my areas of focus for both business and artistic reasons. Pet Portraits are my most popular creative items from a profit perspective, but they also are my best work. I enjoy creating them. I enjoy the interaction with the pet lovers who commission portraits, and I feel artistically challenged with each new work. It makes sense on many levels to focus my creative and business energy in this direction.

On January 4, 2014, I will debut a completely restructured website with this new focus. New items will be announced and new pricing structures to accommodate various budgets will be established. I hope that you will like the new look and focus!

The new site will have a completely new URL, however, the current URL will be redirected to the new one. All previous blog posts will be migrated to the new site. I will post the new information for RSS feeds and posts to email here on January 4. This site will remain, however, eventually it will have all site info directing to the new site.

I am looking for 2014 to be a great year for BZTAT Studios. I hope that your year is grand as well.

Happy New Year!
