Old dogs and new tricks

We sometimes dream of living the life of simplicity that dogs seem to have. Play. Love. Sleep. Protect.

Yet dogs grow old, just as we do. As they age, they play less, love and sleep more, and protect in whatever way they are able.

I wonder…Do they lament the days gone by when they were more able to move their legs swiftly and bound about with joyful abandon?

Do they reach a point where they recognize there are more days behind them than there are ahead?

Or do they take each day, one at a time, and simply live with what they now have here in the present?

I suspect it is the latter. And I suspect that we could learn some new tricks from a dog’s simple approach to life.

December Doodle – Jack Russell Terrier

I had a request for a Jack Russell Terrier doodle, so here it is! I like Jack Russell terriers and hope someday to get the chance to paint a more complete portrait of one. Their markings and sharp profile look fun to paint!

A doodle, according to Wikipedia, is “an unfocused drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes.” My doodles often have some focus to them, but they are less formal than a regular drawing. Sometimes the images are somewhat cartoonish and sometimes they are just scribbles and line formations.

For each day from Dec. 1 – 15 (2011) I will make a December Doodle drawing and hold an auction for it here on the blog. These drawings will make nice gifts, and if you want, I will gift wrap and mail to whomever you would like the gift(s) to go. And since animals always are in greater need as winter takes hold, I will donate 10% of the proceeds to a registered animal charity.

Which charity? You help me decide! Post the charity that you would like me to support on my Facebook Fanpage, and I will randomly select from all the submissions on Dec. 15, 2011. (Charities must be for animal rescue, in the United States, and must have a 501(c) non-profit status.)

Digital Doodle – Shih Tzu Mania!

Button is a Shih Tzu dog with lots of character and attitude. Her human loves to share photos of her on Facebook, and I loved her recent photo with Santa. So I used the photo as a starting point for a doodle that has nothing to do with Santa, but everything top do with the mania that goes along with an active, playful pup!
