I do not often draw or paint images of people. It really is not my thing. I prefer to leave that genre to people who really have a passion for drawing and painting the human figure.

I do, however, create images of children on occasion. I was a therapist for children for 20 years, and they have inspired the simple, colorful nature of my artwork.

Children have been very present in my mind lately as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting has weighed heavily on me. I have written about that on my Okey’s Promise blog, and today’s drawing is a takeoff from an image I created for this particular article about the power of images.

Five month old Xiao Liwu had a big day yesterday. The young Giant Panda cub had her first day in the great outdoors at the San Diego Zoo! Until yesterday, she had remained indoors in the Panda enclosure under the safe guidance of her mother.

By all accounts, she had a great time playing and frolicking in her new found habitat. I thought it was worthy of memorializing the moment with a drawing.

Today’s drawing is a little white dog – I am not sure what breed. I played around with a photo in various photo apps and then did some drawing on it as well. It came out semi abstract, but seems to show the essence of canine curiosity and playfulness.
