"Tuscon's Prayer for Peace"

I am making a drawing every day in January, and posting each day’s drawing here on my blog. Each drawing will be placed for auction here with a buy now option for folks who don’t get into the auction frenzy.

I would have been happy to continue the cheerful animal themed artworks that I have done so far and for which I am most known. Today, however, I have a heavy heart, and I can’t ignore that artistically.

Two public servants, Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Federal Judge John Roll, as well as others, were harmed today in a brutal shooting in Tuscon, AZ. As of this writing, it is known that Judge Roll was fatally wounded and that Congresswoman Giffords is fighting for her life. The motives of the shooter are unknown, however, when public servants are purposely harmed, it is hard to avoid the political implications.

I have friends who are on the political left and friends who are on the political right. I know none of them would have wished this event on anyone, regardless of political persuasion. I push neither agenda here today. I simply ask, with my art and with my words, that we avoid over-reaction through more angry rhetoric on either side.

Please, let us choose words that heal and do not incite troubled persons when we disagree. Let us all hope for peace as we cope and try to make sense of what has happened with this tragedy.
